Happiness is really important to many of us, in fact it may be the most important thing to us and our lives. What a great personal trainer does is by being enthusiastic and attentive they deliver happiness to everyone they encounter in their presence. Happiness can be a very vague term but in a nutshell we interpret it as a feeling you get that makes you feel very positive. What we do as trainers to promote happiness is we get thank you cards and we send them to you because we genuinely are grateful to earn your business. We also give you surprise upgrades and gift cards to show you how much we pay attention to your progress and appreciate your hard work because you … deserve it.
We as personal trainers deliver the happiness by paying attention to you and only you when you come for your session because we know ”you” time is important. We deliver happiness by giving you our commitment that we will do whatever it takes to get you to your results. We pay attention and we want to get to know about you, your family, your work, your hobbies and everything else because we want to make an impact.

Surprise upgrades can dramatically increase your customer experience and loyalty. I learned this one from the online company ZAPPOS.COM where they would surprise upgrade their clients and give them free overnight shipping or a gift coupon. Do you have any idea what kind of impact this has on a client when you surprise upgrade them? There is nothing that makes someone feel as special as a positive surprise gift especially from a company. Think of the psychology of this, most people including myself believe that businesses only care about getting your money or making the highest profit margin on you and that is all. Sad I know :( But when a company does offer surprise upgrades and then on top of that follows through with what they promised a great product or service then you have officially changed the game. This is something that you must put in your pricing and budget so that you can consistently make the offers and upgrades. This is a great way to brand yourself as the company or person who cares. I wrote an email to Tony Hsieh the CEO of zappos and he told me that the best way to set this up is to base it off of your % of sales. So choose a % and allocate that money to doing surprise upgrades.
A story from our company was we had some clients who purchased a personal training package for a year and it was for a couple a husband and wife.What we did was we knew that they were very serious about getting into better shape and wanting to change their lives so what we did one day when they came in was we approached them and said surprise you have been upgraded to another year of personal training on us for FREE. They were so excited to get it that the couple has had a much higher visit rate to the gym and using the training consistently that we will have a lifetime fan of Elite.
Another story from our company is when we had a client who had a serious heart condition and was seeing her doctor several times a week and had to be closely monitored and not allowed to go higher than a certain heart rate. For all you trainers out there you know how intimidating that can be so we gave her a trainer that we felt was the best suited for her. What we did was in order to insure that she had the best and safest experience, we went out and bought her a 100 dollar heart rate monitor as a surprise to help her attain her fitness goals. Needless to say she was ecstatic and she came to the gym everyday and worked hard with her trainer because she felt that support system. Now that is what FITNESS is all about!
