Many people when they are trying to get in better shape, let their past and their emotions take over instead of letting go and allowing themselves to change into the person that they want to be. Your past is not who you are now. I know that I have made that mistake many times over thinking that past events dictate how I feel now and how I should feel. I did not start to learn the important habit of giving myself permission to be who I want and to enjoy the moment until a few years ago. This was a very foreign concept to me and I now realize that I was the one holding myself back this entire time and blaming others and situations instead of taking the responsibility. Now, granted it does take time to learn through failures and tribulations and it does not happen by accident, when a failure or a mistake happens you must discipline yourself to learn the lesson from it so that you can become better in the future.
Now how do you apply this to your fitness goals? This is a great question that must be analyzed and answered if you want to be the best that you can be in your fitness pursuit. You are going to have to look at your past and also pay very close attention to your daily habits and see what is going and notice the trends. The key reason why this is important is because if you do not pay attention to your habits you will be missing out on some key points that can help make your journey easier. For example, many women eat and crave different things when they are stressed about specific situations or their hormones are fluctuating through the month. This is super important because if you are in this habit and it keeps happening you are going to beat yourself up and think that you have no willpower which is not the case AT ALL. It is a belief system or response to a situation that you have either learned or picked up over time from someone else. So the remedy to this is to just eat normal for a week and track everything you do in addition to how you emotionally feel at the time you are eating the things you are eating and what events may be happening as well. Journaling sounds tedious but it can cause tremendous improvements.
To dive in even deeper look at your childhood and past experiences and truly learn from them. What you will want to look for is your associations with certain activities. For example, if you played sports like me then you will most likely have remembered the experience of using running as a source of punishment when you messed up. What this will actually do is mentally train you to hate running and on top of that you will want to stay as far away as possible from any form of running because that would trigger in your mind that you have “failed” at something and we all know how much we love that.
So in order to make the best of what you want in your fitness life now and to make the improvements that you really want I would recommend that you get an accountability partner and coach as well to help you go through the mental barriers that are often the real reason why we do not reach our goals. When you work on your past and current mental conditionings and really work through them you will see a big breakthrough in your motivation as well as your progression because things will be congruent with each other. I PROMISE.

THERE IS SOMETHING POWERFUL ABOUT BEING AROUND OTHERS THAT HAVE THE SAME GOAL AS YOU, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS FOR THE GOOD OF PEOPLE. ACTUALLY CARING ABOUT OTHERS AND WANTING TO ADD VALUE IS EXCITING WHEN YOU ARE THINKING AND DREAMING ABOUT DOING IT ON YOUR OWN, BUT WHEN YOU FIND OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME DESIRE IT IS INSPIRING TO SAY THE LEAST. SOMETIMES IN THE PAST I HAVE DOUBTED IF IT WAS POSSIBLE TO HAVE PEOPLE WHO WERE MORALLY “THERE” IN BUSINESS BECAUSE INHERENTLY IN BUSINESS SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE NOT ETHICAL WITH THEIR CHOICES OR DO NOT HAVE OTHERS BEST INTERESTS IN MIND. TO ME I THINK THAT A BUSINESS AND A ORGANIZATION SHOULD BE A PLACE WHERE THE TEAM FEELS THAT THEY ARE SAFE, TAKEN CARE OF, AND ENCOURAGED TO GROW SO THAT SOCIETY CAN HAVE A CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE MORE GOOD THINGS. I FEEL THAT BUSINESS SHOULD BE SOMETHING THAT EMPOWERS EVERYONE THAT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH IT. I BELIEVE THAT WHEN THE HEART IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE YOU ATTRACT THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO FOLLOW THE VISION. IN THE BEGINNING I DID NOT HAVE 100 % FAITH BECAUSE OF PAST EXPERIENCES BUT NOW I AM A COMPLETE BELIEVER.
MY DREAM IS TO PUT TOGETHER A TEAM OF PEOPLE THAT OUR ENERGY AND INTENTION IS SO STRONG WITH POSITIVITY THAT IT CAN LITERALLY CHANGE PEOPLE’S LIVES AND HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THEMSELVES. TO BE ABLE TO GIVE HOPE TO THOSE WHO LIKE MYSELF AT TIMES MAY HAVE DOUBTED IF THERE WERE ANY GOOD PEOPLE LEFT IN THE WORLD. I WANT OUR TEAM AND COMPANY TO BE LIVING PROOF THAT IT IS THERE AND THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE NOT JUST ONE PERSON, BUT A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE, HAVE YOUR BEST INTERESTS IN MIND AS WELL AS EACH OTHERS INTERESTS IN MIND BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I FEEL LIFE IS ABOUT. LIFE IS NOT ABOUT ONLY MATERIAL POSSESSIONS, LIFE IS ABOUT CONTRIBUTING TO A LARGER CAUSE THAT IS BIGGER THAN YOURSELF AND NOT LETTING MEDIA DICTATE YOUR TRUE FEELINGS.
OUR MISSION IS TO BE THE MOST CUSTOMER SERVICE ORIENTED FITNESS CULTURE.
GREG MARSHALL ON HOW BEING GENUINE COUNTS

It is funny to think about the subject of motivation and especially the main motivating reasons why people have hired me and our company in the past to help them achieve their fitness goals. As a personal trainer I hear everything that you can imagine hence the word “personal” in the personal training.
First I want to share a story to you about why I decided to start exercising. When I was growing up I was extremely skinny and if it even sounds possible I was self conscious about my body and how I looked because I was so much skinnier than everyone else. In my mind and the image that I thought I was supposed to be as a male was the exact opposite of what I actually was. I was not a very strong kid or muscular kid but I will give myself some credit I was an athletic kid. So anyways I was a very self conscious kid about my weight on the other spectrum….I was too skinny according to me. Most people think the only people who can have body image problems are people who are overweight but that is so far from the truth. Being on the opposite end and being very skinny can cause the very same emotional triggers and insecurities that being overweight can cause. So what I decided to start doing at the age of 13 was to go out and start lifting weights and be proactive about the situation. So the main motivation for me was to become more self confident and at ease in my own skin. What I found out as I started to workout was that I enjoyed many other aspects that came along with it such as the endorphin rush and the extra energy. Also it did help my sports performance since baseball was my life so no complaints there. But working out and fitness changed my life because it gave me that confidence in myself which of course benefited all the other aspects of my life such as sports, dating, and friendships.
So the natural question I have for you is what is your main motivator? This is something that over time and doing a million fitness assessments I have learned that people are not comfortable not only admitting their main motivating factors to me or another person, but also they oftentimes do not even want to admit it to themselves. I hear so many surface answers in the beginning when I ask what people’s motivations are. Some are they want to just tone up or lose some weight or they want to lift more weight or build more muscle. And every single time I hear that, a trigger goes off in my head that clearly says that their is a deeper reason for that person that they either do not know yet or have not admitted to themselves.
You must ask yourself what is the real reason? The REAL reason!! Do you want to get in better shape because your spouse said a comment to you that maybe made you feel a little self conscious? Is your self esteem low because of how your parents or loved ones treated you? Do you want to get a girlfriend or boyfriend but don’t think you look “the part”? Do you want to have a better sex life and not feel as self conscious? Do you feel like a bad parent because you cannot be active with your kids or grand kids? Do you have an emotional void that you are trying to fill? Do you value yourself only on your physical appearance? Do you have things in your life going on that you are trying to cope with?
Those questions above are meant to make you isolate your real reason and admit it to yourself because once you admit the real reason to yourself you can start to take a total approach to your fitness goals. Understanding yourself and your why’s are the key to being able to motivate yourself and truly improve your life. Life does not improve by just fixing surface issues but life improves when you fix the inner you. Fitness is the tool and I promise when you work on your inner person and the why’s that are driving you it becomes incredibly easier to hit and maintain your fitness goals. YOU maybe unconsciously sabotaging yourself without even knowing it.

HERE IS A FREE 6 WEEK FITNESS WORKOUT THAT I CREATED TO HELP YOU GUYS REACH YOUR FITNESS GOALS. HOPE YOU ENJOY!

It can be quite daunting to think about all of the options that you have when you enter a gym because the equipment seems to change very often and sometimes the free weight areas can be so scary looking with all of the people that seem like they know what they are doing. (and most of them don’t lol) The question that gets asked a lot and for good reason because we are all so busy and want results is what is the best way to get my results and FAST? Well the answer to that question is all of them. Just like any other goals that you want to accomplish in life you have to do a mixture of several different techniques and methods in order to get the best results.
Machines are the best for doing many isolated exercises or in plain regular people talk it is best to do machines to help isolate a specific area on the body such as a tricep or bicep. Machines also allow you to have variation to do different movements without making yourself susceptible to injury. Also machines allow you to do very intense sets such as drop sets or super sets without the hassle of having to keep stopping in between sets to move the weights around and keeping you safe at the same time just in case you get muscle failure or fatigue :)
Free weights are best for doing compound exercises like bench press or squats and they really offer a different dynamic because they unlike machines can work more muscle groups at once and are typically not going to be isolated movements. Also since you can work multiple groups of muscles at once you get the added benefit of good intensity and being able to work out even those stabilizer muscles. This gives your body a chance to be more complete with not only “good looking” muscles but also a more functional body that will have health and longevity benefits.
Cardio equipement is all about what activities you like to do most and what you can stay dedicated to just as much as what physical limitations you have. For example if you have bad knees but are looking for that cardio to keep your heart healthy and body fat and weight down then the elliptical or stationary bike are going to be great alternatives while not killing your knees. The point of cardio exercise for the most part is to get your heart rate to levels that are above your normal heart rate to be able to see results and challenge your body to be more efficient. And have fun!
So the best advice that will be practical for you is to shoot for an hour workout utilizing all three in your workouts and adding variety so that you can of course see the best and fastest results and keep your workouts fun and exciting.

Fitness has changed my life forever and it is something that is very special for me and I want to be able to make it special for you too. Fitness can do so many things for yo in other areas in your life it is not even funny. Fitness is not just lifting weights or mindlessly running on the treadmill it is something with real benefits that can help you do things like be a better parent, better spouse, better worker, or just have a better quality of life. This should be able to motivate you to want to get in the best shape that you can because of the so many benefits that you can get. I am convinced that if you made it a routine that you did each and every day and gave yourself some credit you could be in much better shape than you can even imagine.
I have seen so many clients lose 50, 60, 70 and even 100 pounds with the help of a great support group and making fitness there priority. This is something that makes a real difference and I cannot tell you how gratifying it is to see people make these changes and being able to see them in their before and after state. It is like these people are no longer the same. They tell me thank you for getting them started in their fitness programs because I gave them hope and let them believe in themselves. Let me tell you something there is not a better feeling in the world than that right there. That is what keeps me going and what makes me want to offer as much value as humanly possible to my clients. I truly have a passion for seeing people like you go in with no clue of what or how they will reach their fitness goals and then come out 12 months later and say they cannot believe how passionate they are about working out and wonder why they never started earlier.
I love the community that is inside of a gym the people saying hello, the relationships that I have formed, the changing of lives each and everyday and getting to know people for more than just how many reps they are doing. I get to get to know people and where they work, how they are doing in life, where they like to travel, what they like to do, how many kids they have, and the most satisfying feeling in the world being able to offer a shoulder or an ear when someone needs it. That is what makes the fitness industry my favorite because of the direct impact that you can have on someone.
Personal training has come to me quite natural because what most people and trainers don’t realize is that personal training is not about reps and sets. It is not even about the best certifications, it is all about the people. People are what make the fitness industry and the gym and you have to be able to be good with people and be able to have a helping mentality to succeed at this. I firmly believe people hire us because they are looking not only for knowledge but for a friend that can support them and help give them faith in themselves to accomplish their goals. Most people do not have that support system in so many parts of their lives and when they get someone who can not only help them get in better shape but support them as a friend, that means the WORLD.
I love everything about the fitness and industry and the people and I plan on building teams of people who feel the same way I do to help you reach those goals but with that X factor….you know? That thing that you cannot explain but it is there.

The reason why I got involved in personal training and why The Gym at City Creek has interested me so much is because of what the people who are going to be involved in it are like. The core values and the offers that are going to be made available are going to be amazing. There will be all types of amenities, equipment, personal training, and most important of all an INCREDIBLE gym culture. This is going to be one of the best fitness facilities in the country and definitely will be a place to recognize in the state of Utah and especially in the city of Salt lake. This will be a facility that we will put our heart and soul into offering the best customer service and experience around. This is going to be a place where the customer is always right and we will go above and beyond to accomplish this goal of total customer satisfaction. This is truly going to be a special time for Salt Lake City, Utah and I am very excited to see how many people’s lives we will be able to change when we open. I am looking to help change the entire state of Utah and it’s view of personal training and the gym experience. The ways that I am looking to personally add value to this facility will be hiring the best and most personable personal trainers that truly care about our clients. By having the best management team available and the best resources to be able to please all of our clients.
I truly believe there is no better team to accomplish this feat of challenging the status quo of other gyms in the area. We will set the new standard of how people and gym members will get treated and this will be the only way gyms will be able to survive. The time has come where the customers and clients should get treated like people and not just like numbers. I am so passionate about making this the best experience possible and putting smiles on our members faces that I can hardly stop thinking about it.
Here are the benefits that will come with being involved with The Gym at City Creek
Trying to reach your fitness goals and join a gym can be a lot of times a very intimidating or confusing time because most of the time gyms are either trying to hard sell you (because they do not care about you) or there is not enough help available to help you feel comfortable. The number one concern that most people have when they first come into a gym is that they do not know what to do and they feel self conscious. That will not happen here because there will be fitness professionals around to help guide you and understand why and what you should do. And not only that they will do it with a smile on their face and care in their heart. You do not have to worry about feeling like you have to do this on your own. I cannot stress this enough this will be a fitness culture like none you have ever seen we are not interested in building a gym culture that only cares about what people look like or only having “muscle heads” around but one where you feel that you can be yourself and challenge yourself and make fitness a lifestyle choice.
That is what I am trying to sell to everyone every single day of my life is that fitness can be a fun lifestyle and it is an attainable goal to reach. Fitness should be something that you feel you can follow and achieve without having to think of it as some kind of restriction or punishment or 6 week fad. This is what we are going to teach you is how to make it something that you can follow and keep it simple. You will definitely need to come check us out when we have our grand opening and see for yourself…we will be different, I PROMISE.
Here is a Slideshow I created to show you how to have a realistic fitness lifestyle.

I recently had a conversation with a client that had a concern for the nutrition aspect of their fitness…just like everyone :) but the concern was definitely a valid concern which I can understand. The question was how do I follow a healthy diet without getting bored? The client wanted to know how to avoid this because this was something that has been a challenge for him in the past. It got me thinking and my answer to it was to do a few things that would be considered helpful for him and that is
The point that I was making was that most of the time people fail to keep a nutrition plan (gosh I hate the word diet) because they are not looking for ways to eat the same way that they are eating but just substituting the bad or fattier foods with better choices. I recommend that you do a food log for a week or two and eat regularly so that does mean have that Pepsi if you normally do or that hamburger and fries. After you do that food log then I challenge you to either ask a personal trainer, nutritionist, or even yourself and find ways to mimmick the things that you already enjoy and just substitute them with a healthier choice. For example if you are usually eating hamburgers out at restaurants consider making your own hamburgers at home so you can control what you are eating. Also get the leaner ground beef so there is not as much fat content and put it on a whole wheat bun. There is a start of eating healthier and being able to still feel like you are eating regularly and NOT on a diet.
Eating healthy is not as hard or expensive as you think give yourself a chance and educate yourself or get someone to help educate you and make the decision to do it. I PROMISE it gets easier over time, it is all about the knowledge.
