Weight Train
I experience this quite often when I hear of some of my clients who say that they need to lose weight and get back into shape. The first thing they say when they want to lose weight is “I need to get on the treadmill” so i can start to lose weight.
Getting on the treadmill is only part of the equation and will not solve your problem completely. Think weight training all the way to solve this problem.
If you want to look better in your clothes, you have to change your body composition. The best way in my opinion to change your body composition is weight training.
Weight training is what will build muscle and tone up those areas that you want to work on such as lower abs, flabby arm area, glute (butt) area, and inner and outer thigh.
You should be spending just as much time if not more time on weight training than cardio if the problems that I listed above apply to you.
Aim to weight train 3-5 days per week emphasizing one to two muscle groups per day. Start with light weight and higher reps.
What holds people back and how to solve them
A big misconception about weight training that people have is that it will bulk you up and make you look like a bodybuilder. My counter to that is if it were that easy to build bulky muscle then there would be no reason why people would ever take supplements or steroids to build muscle.
Weight training will not bulk you up because all weight training is, is breaking your muscle tissue down so that you can build more muscle mass on your body. You have complete control on how “bulky” you become by your nutrition and supplement choice.
In other words, unless you are deliberately trying to bulk up, you will not bulk up. This is especially true for women, as women have lower levels of the hormone testosterone in their bodies. Testosterone is a hormone that has a great influence of how much muscle mass your body has.
The best way to solve your fear of bulking up is to re frame your mindset. Think lifting weights as burning calories as opposed to bulking up.
If you are intimidated by lifting weights because of all of the “bodybuilders” in a weight training area, don’t be. My advice to you would be to hire a personal trainer or find a friend who knows exercise well and ask them to show you how to perform weight training exercise.
